First Light Foods forages for and sources the finest wild gourmet mushrooms. Due to each variety’s seasonality, these can be available at different times of the year. Filling our basket at varying times of the year are chicken of the woods, field mushrooms, porcini, parasols, pine rings, wood blewits and morels. We recognize that not all of the best-tasting mushrooms grow wild in South Africa, which is why we also source highly sought-after varieties such as chanterelles, truffles and trompette from abroad.
Every aspect of sustainability and conservation is practiced when harvesting mushrooms. We take great care in preserving the environment while foraging, understanding the eco-system and the role that fungi plays in it.
